No Clean-up Oatmeal: Mary Snow taught this trick when we were on Whitney. No mess, no clean-up. Instant oatmeal the staple of many backpackers breakfasts are sealed inside. Tear the packet as close to the top edge as possible. Add hot water, stir and use the package as a bowl. Wear gloves as it gets very hot. Also doubles a hand warmer. Safeway oatmeal packets even appear to have a foil type liner. Return to Top
- Wear waterproof boots and gaiters - regularly
- Regularly replace wet socks with dry ones
- Remove wet socks when going to bed. Place against your body during the day, inside your sleeping bag at night
- Loosen bootlaces and avoid bulky socks - tight footwear can restrict blood flow
- Wear liner socks and gloves to create warm air pockets between outer garments and you skin
- Foot warmers - stick them to the bottom of your socks - they can last for 9 hours
- Fill a Nalgene with hot water & place in the bottom of your sleeping bag. Works great!
